Puppy Vaccinations in Toledo Ohio, What You Actually Need to Know

Getting a new puppy is a lot. The vaccine schedule should be the easy part.

We see puppies at roughly 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks for their core shots. Those cover distemper, parvovirus, and rabies. Rabies is required by Ohio law and has to be given at 16 weeks.

Parvovirus is the one that kills puppies fast, especially in areas with a lot of dog traffic. Toledo dog parks and boarding facilities around the Maumee area are places your puppy should not go until they are fully vaccinated. We are not trying to be dramatic about it. Parvo is serious and the vaccine works.

After the puppy series, your dog gets a one year booster and then can switch to a three year cycle for the core vaccines. Bordetella, the kennel cough shot, gets updated yearly if your dog goes to daycare, boarding, or anywhere with lots of dogs.

We adjust what we recommend based on your dog's lifestyle. An indoor puppy with limited exposure to other dogs does not need everything under the sun. We will tell you what they actually need.
